Welcome to mediacenterguides.com. Here you will find guides for how to customize Media Center. The site has been designed to be user editable, so feel free to make corrections or add details where needed. You are also encouraged to create new guides for Media Center topics that haven't been covered yet.

CableCARD for Non OEMs

Great news for Media Center fans!  Yesterday Microsoft announced that it will be opening up the CableCARDi system so that anyone can add a CableCARD tuner to their Windows 7 system.  While this isn't everything that we want from Media Center, it has renewed my excitement for the platform.

Help Support Media Center Guides

Hosting isn't free, and it takes a lot of time to add and test new features and content for the site (and I have a lot more planned), so if you can help that would be great!

No, I'm not asking for donations, but don't let that stop you if you are so inclined.  :)

Here is a short list of ways you can help:

Registry Tweaks for Media Center

Tagged:

I've redone the Registry Tweaks section of the site.  It should now be much easier to navigate through the various registry entries to find what you are looking for.  It is also much easier for users to add new registry entries, and you can make comments about any of the registry tweaks individually.

Check out the new Registry Tweaks page HERE.

Media Center Guides Application List

Tagged:

We've just added an Applications section to Media Center Guides.  This section features a list of many of the available plugins for Windows Media Center.  After you login (using either OpenID, or by creating a new account) you can rate your favorite applications, leave comments about them, or even have us host your Media Center application for you.

Check out the Media Center Application listing HERE.

MCKeySender

MCKeySender is a simple application that can send keystrokes to the Media Center window.  It can also be used to automate basic Media Center tasks.  It is used by running the MCKeySender.exe with command line parameters.

MCKeySender supports the following parameters:

Logos Instead of Screenshots for Video Library

Show Icons

Replace the default screenshot thumbnails in your Media Center video library with your own logos or icons.

Rate your Feature Requests for Media Center

I started a Feature Requests thread over a year ago at The Green Button here: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/191773.aspx Since that time the thread has grown to be quite long, as has the request list.  Recently several Microsoft employees have become more active on that thread, and people are asking about polling options again.

Hide Memory Card Readers from the Picture Library

If you have a memory card reader on your Media Center computer, you may notice that under the Picture Library there are a bunch of extra entries for either "Storage Device" or "Portable Device".  These entries are very annoying because you can't actually do anything with them unless there is a memory card in the device.

You can hide these by doing the following:

Tips and Tricks

  • You can use the "OK" button (big button in the center for those of you who are a bit slow) to go to the previous channel while watching live TV.
  • "Skip" during live or recorded TV to go ahead 30 seconds. During music this will go to the next track. During DVDs this will go to the next chapter.
  • "Replay" will go back 7 seconds. During music this will go to the previous track.
