The only codec pack you'll ever need...
*Administrator's note* - This was submitted by an anonymous source and reads an awful lot like an advertisement. It also doesn't have any type of a walk through or tips for settings, etc. THIS HAS NOT BEEN VERIFIED as being a good solution. I would love to see comments on it and more details, until then the direct link has been removed, and the article has been removed from the front page.
Yes, you may have heard that before. but after many years fiddling with Windows Media Center (both XP and Vista) I'm pretty sure I have this right. The people developing the Combined Community Codec Pack have put in a lot of work to make it as bug-free and complete as possible, and it seems very stable. It supports a huge number of different video and audio file types including Mpeg 1, 2, 4, AVI, MKV, MOV and more importantly H264! It also works with Media Center to add file-type recognition and bring up thumbnails in the Media Center interface. It doesn't interfere with the rest of Media Center at all, it just invisibly adds support for non-standard formats. Thoroughly recommended!

If you have other codec packs installed it's worth uninstalling them first. CCCP provide a utility called "CCCP Insurgent" to help with this.

While CCCP is considered one of the better Codec Packs--Codec Packs are not advised for HTPCs. Stick with FFDS Show Tryouts + Maali Media Splitter
